A litle philosophy with your Post Toasties this morning

Beware of blogger thinking deep thoughts!

It occurs to me that the process of discovering your own insignificance in the grand scheme of things is not just a sign of maturity, but the very definition of maturity.

A newborn baby really has no knowledge of anything outside himself or herself. They are a self-contained world. Then the baby realizes that the nipple is outside them. Then Mommy and Daddy. Then maybe a mobile or a toy. Isn't the acting out of the "terrible two's" a manifestation of the frustration we feel when we find out the the world really doesn't revolve around us? That's the age (usually) when the kid hears and processes the word "no" for the first time. Then we go to school, and come into contact with a group of people like us, all of which have to be accomodated in one way or another. Et cetera, et cetera, et cetera...

And this process shouldn't stop. Ever.

Isn't "self-absorbed" a pretty good synonym for "immature"?

Maturity (n) : The level to which a person realizes that it's not all about them.
